Chicken Coop Types: According to Material
There are many chicken coop design, types, and patterns. There are many variations and types of chicken coops but there are main types that you should know about when you want to build your own chicken coop. One of the main types of chicken coops is classified according to the material used in building your coop. These two types are wood and Eglus (or plastic).
The typical chicken coop is a wooden coop. They come in all shapes and sizes. Chicken coop builders generally use three materials when building their wooden chicken coop. These are the wood, 2 by 4’s that are unprocessed to protect the health of the chickens, shingles for the roof to keep bad weather out, and siding or the exterior protection. You will also need screws, nails, wire for the chicken run, and other various materials.
The second kind of chicken coop according to material is the Eglus coop. It is a plastic, tent-like structure coop that looks similar to an igloo. These Eglus coops said to be predator proof and come with an attached chicken run. They are urban friendly, and are recommended to those who don’t have large backyard. They only hold a few chickens, so if you plan to raise many chickens the wooded is the best for you. But if you live in a city or just want to have 2 chickens, the Eglus is a great option.
Make sure that you don’t neglect the small and important details of what kind of chicken coop you’ll truly need because in the end it could hurt you big time. Choosing the best type of coop for where you live and your specific situation will definitely help you in the end.

Chickens aren’t loud although occasionally mine do ‘announce’ the fact that they’ve laid an egg by crowing rather loudly. But this is not often.
Well kept chickens don’t smell. If you clear the coop of the dropping using a cat litter scoop each morning it will keep the odour to a minimum in the coop. You can also add some garlic powder to the hens feed which neutralizes the smell from the droppings.
Eglu’s are great, I don’t have one but they’re suitable for people living in suburban area’s, look funky but the only downside is the price and some people have commented on how difficult it is to access the eglu’s.
Keeping hens is very rewarding and it’s not only because of the eggs they produce but also hens are such great little characters and will entertain you to no end!
