Farmer Fred has goats and chickens in his fenced barnyard. Tiny Tim can only see under the fence and he counts 72 feet. Tall Tony can see over the fence and he counts 26 heads. How many chickens does Farmer Fred have in his barnyard?
c = chicken; g = goat
Given that each chicken has two feet (2c) and each goat has four (4g), the solution would be as followed:
4g + 2c = 72 feet
g + c = 26 heads
you apply systems of equation:
4g + 2c = 72
minus
4(g + c) = 104
4g + 2c = 72
minus
4g + 4c) = 104
equals:
-2c = -32
divide each side by -2 to get the amount of c (chicken) by itself:
c = 16 chickens
